Free outdoor music series kicks off tonight
By Dominic Serrao

The third annual "Come Together'' music series, featuring young local musicians, kicks off in downtown Clinton today.

Inspired by the Beatles' iconic song, the title of the series sums up its mission. Live music, featuring an array of musical styles and genres from jazz and soft rock to independent pop and Broadway tunes, will be played from 7 to 9 p.m. every Friday through Sept. 17 at four sidewalk venues across town.

The music is free.

The brainchild of Clinton Guild member Anne Rossi, owner of the AddictedJeans Store on Main Street, the music series was started out of a desire to create a venue for up-and-coming musicians to showcase their talents to the public.

"Opening up the streets of Clinton and reaching out to the music community has also been beneficial for the local business community'' by bringing new shoppers to town, Rossi added.

More than 25 musicians and bands will perform this summer. According to organizers, the shops in town will stay open late, and some stores will provide specials during the music each week.

The music series creates a sense of community, said jazz musician Arturo of Basking Ridge, who has been a frequent performer at the series. "It brings people into town and gives musicians a chance to be heard,'' he added.

Singer/songwriter Brian Colburn of High Bridge, who has been performing throughout New Jersey for more than 15 years, appreciates the expanded audience he reaches.

"The town provides a great setting for local artists to share their music with the community,'' Colburn said. "It's not often that a solo artist, such as myself, has the opportunity to share his music with such a vast age range.''

According to Arturo, parents bring their young children and give them their first exposure to live music in an accessible setting.

"Compare this to an arena-sized rock concert,'' he said. "Both have their place, but this is a great way to introduce young people to music as an art form without overwhelming their senses.''
